The Policy Innovation Lab is supporting the implementation of South Africa’s Digital Transformation Roadmap. This roadmap is centred around the development of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in the form of digital ID system, a digital payment system and data exchange systems. This DPI will then be used to improve service delivery. The key idea of DPI is that it is made open, interoperable, safe and accessible so that the private sector can also make use of it (just like with regular infrastructure).

For DPI to translate to economic growth and better governance it is essential that the policies, regulations and legislation concerning these technologies and the systems that use them are also modernised. This is where the Lab comes in. We have set up a DPI Reference Group – experts in laws related to digital technology at Stellenbosch University – who will help us support the process of reforming South Africa’s regulatory and policy environment to enable effective DPI development and implementation. Their expertise covers topics like data, privacy, procurement and automated decision-making.
