Responsible AI tools for transformative policymaking in South Africa.

The Policy Innovation Lab at Stellenbosch University works with The Presidency of South Africa on using responsible AI to transform policymaking in South Africa and beyond. Through innovative research, actionable insights and capacity-building initiatives, we harness AI’s potential to address policymaking challenges and advance the Sustainable Development Goals.

Focus

areas

The Policy Innovation Lab works with experts from universities in South Africa and globally, alongside non-academic partners, to advance responsible AI and transformative policymaking. Our work spans research, capacity building and other practically-oriented initiatives. Through these efforts, we aim to drive policy innovation and accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals in South Africa and beyond.

Artificial
Intelligence

We build AI tools for policymaking in South Africa and beyond and help policymakers use them responsibly. Our AI for Policy Platform gives policymakers secure access to a suite of large language model tools, designed for minimal data retention, for everyday tasks. We pair the tools with training for public servants and policy professionals, and we work with departments to assess and build their readiness to adopt AI.

Digital Public
Infrastructure

We support an evidence-based understanding of the regulatory frameworks that govern digital public infrastructure. DPI, the shared digital systems for identity, payments and data exchange, can only deliver economic and social value if the surrounding laws, regulations and policies keep pace. We work to clarify what that regulatory framework should look like so DPI can be deployed responsibly.

Policy Advice
and Dialogue

We work to strengthen how policy advice is provided in government, and we creeate dialogue opportunities to help improve South Africa’s policy advice system. At the centre of government, the systems that coordinate, monitor and evaluate policy determine the quality of the advice that reaches decision-makers. We work with the Presidency and partners to improve these systems so policymaking rests on better evidence. We also convene dialogues that put policymakers, researchers and others with relevant expertise in the same room.
