In a world where big problems often demand even bigger promises, the Goalkeepers South Africa network is quietly doing something different. They are getting to work.

On 12 May 2025, members of the network gathered online for the seventh session in a growing series hosted by the Policy Innovation Lab at Stellenbosch University, which serves as the secretariat to the initiative. These sessions are part of a deliberate effort to deepen connections among Goalkeepers and strengthen collaborative action in localising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With each gathering, the network becomes a more connected and action-oriented community.

The central feature of this session was a live project presentation by Bontle Tshole and Dr Heinrich Volmink. Both are Goalkeepers from different cohorts who have joined forces to address the rising challenge of lifestyle-related diseases. Ms Tshole founded Baa Health, a company focused on accessible health-conscious food products. Dr Volmink co-founded and leads Prevmed Health, a healthcare initiative specialising in personalised and preventative medicine.

Their collaboration centres on health and nutrition, aligning with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger). The project combines Dr Volmink’s expertise in precision medicine and Ms Tshole’s work in health-focused food innovation, creating a powerful model for tackling lifestyle-related diseases through clinical and consumer pathways. The presentation served multiple purposes: a demonstration of what effective Goalkeeper collaboration can look like, an opportunity to share their vision with peers, and a space to receive constructive feedback from the broader network.

The session also offered space for informal updates and peer learning, with members sharing personal milestones, professional challenges, and reflections on their journeys. It built on the existing momentum created by the group and continues to create a sense of solidarity grounded in shared goals and mutual support.
