Position Overview

The Policy Innovation Lab (Lab) at Stellenbosch University’s School for Data Science and Computational Thinking invites applications for a one-year doctoral assistant position. This role will support the efficient operation and strategic development of the Lab, contributing significantly to the Lab’s mission of enhancing policymaking in South Africa through the application of innovative tools and methodologies.

About the Policy Innovation Lab

The Policy Innovation Lab employs a blend of qualitative and quantitative approaches to strengthen policymaking processes. By collaborating closely with policymakers, the Lab aims to improve the understanding of policy challenges and potential solutions, thus supporting the acceleration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in South Africa. The Lab partners with the Policy and Research Services branch in the Presidency of South Africa through the SDG Initiative, funded by the GIZ and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handling all administrative and operational tasks efficiently.
  • Supporting logistics for public events and media communications, including social media.
  • Providing strategic input to enhance the Lab’s initiatives and projects.
  • Managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously with precision and care.
  • Maintaining a friendly, approachable, and professional demeanour.
  • Ensuring meticulous attention to detail in all activities.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be enrolled in a doctoral degree program in a relevant field at Stellenbosch University.
  • Possess exceptional organizational, project management, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in public policy.
  • Thrive in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Conditions

  • Duration: One-year fixed-term appointment, subject to the availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
  • Starting Date: 1 July 2024.
  • Stipend: R200 000 per year, paid in monthly instalments.
  • The University reserves the right not to make an appointment or to extend the closing date.
