Meet Mike Skosana, a passionate social entrepreneur from KwaNdebele in Mpumalanga, South Africa, whose journey is as inspiring as it is unique. Raised by a single mother who valued education despite financial hardships, Mike’s path began with a single transformative opportunity: the chance to study computers. This one step opened doors to international fellowships and community leadership, fuelling his commitment to ensuring that young people in his community have the same opportunities that changed his life.

With a vision to reshape education through technology, Mike co-founded Crystal MG Trading and Projects, where he leads I’m Smart Digital Classes for Kids, a program that integrates digital literacy into early childhood and primary education. Through robotics, critical thinking, and basic computer skills, Mike’s program equips children in underserved areas with tools they would otherwise rarely access. His impact extends beyond education, creating job opportunities for young black women in rural areas who serve as educators in this digital movement. By combining education and employment, Mike addresses Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 (Quality Education), 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and 10 (Reduced Inequalities) in ways that create real change in his community.

Mike’s motivation is deeply personal. Growing up, he was supported by the kindness of strangers who saw potential in him, paid for his courses, and believed in his future. “I am who I am today because of people who helped me when they didn’t have to,” he reflects. This early support now drives his dedication to giving back, making digital education accessible to his community. Each child who gains new skills and each young person who finds employment through his programs reflects his belief in the power of investing in others.

Like many grassroots initiatives, Mike’s work has faced significant challenges, particularly around securing resources. As demand for digital skills programs grows, the cost of technological devices remain a barrier. However, through sponsorships and reinvesting company funds, Crystal MG Trading and Projects has managed to expand its services, reaching over 2,000 children in rural areas.

Mike’s work has garnered widespread recognition. In 2022, he was named a Junior Chamber International (JCI) SA Top Ten Outstanding Young Person for his contributions to children’s rights and world peace. His accolades include the Ignite Talk Winner at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Hollywood Foundation’s Bambelela Business Award, and recognition by Inside Education’s Top 100 Shining Stars in 2023. Recently, he was listed among “25 Africans Changing the Face of Education” by Vive Africa, and he now serves as Vice President of Projects for JCI South Africa’s Mpumalanga chapter. Additionally, Mike is an ambassador for the Arts & Culture Trust, actively creating job opportunities for youth through Crystal MG Trading and Projects.

In his spare time, Mike remains deeply committed to youth development through Vivace Youth Centre, an NGO he founded to cultivate growth and leadership skills in young people. He also freelances for various organizations and government departments, sharing his insights on entrepreneurship and civic leadership. Mike’s commitment to his community runs deep, with regular clothes and shoe drives for underprivileged children, public speaking engagements, and a love for reading—he firmly believes that “Leaders are Readers.”
